The University of Nairobi (UoN) School of Pharmacy Alumni Association on Friday marked the School’s Golden Jubilee in a special way by taking healthcare directly to the people of Kibra. The association, led by Dr. Moses N. Mwangi, HSC, organized a free mega medical camp at Olympic Primary School in Nairobi offering thousands of residents vital health services at no cost.

The event, which brought together alumni pharmacists, healthcare specialists, and partner institutions, underscored the School of Pharmacy’s 50-year legacy of excellence in training pharmacists and contributing to Kenya’s healthcare system.

“This is one of our major activities as we celebrate the Golden Jubilee. It is important for the association to be part of the community, and Kibra has greatly benefited from our services,” said Dr. Mwangi. “We are proud to give back while showing the impact of the pharmacists trained at UoN.”

The camp offered a wide range of services including free screening for diabetes, hypertension, breast and cervical cancer, child vaccination, health education, and provision of medicines. Residents received treatment and medication at no cost, thanks to the support of partners such as the Nairobi City County Medical Department, UoN School of Dentistry Hospital, UoN Eye Hospital, Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, Diabetes Management Institute (DMI), Vitali Health Services, and Equity Afya.

The chief guest, Dr. Wairimu Mbogo, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, hailed the initiative as a true reflection of the profession’s role in society. “This camp is a reminder that pharmacists are not just in hospitals and pharmacies only, we are in communities, ensuring Kenyans live healthier lives,” she said.

Prof. Margaret Oluka, who chaired the team of healthcare professionals executing the camp, praised the alumni for uniting to serve. “Today shows what collaboration between the university, alumni, and partners can achieve for the people.”

The UoN School of Pharmacy, founded in 1974 as the first in the country, has trained more than 2,190 pharmacists and 150 postgraduate specialists. Its alumni now serve in leading positions locally and abroad, including in academia, global health bodies like WHO and UNICEF, and across diverse fields ranging from clinical pharmacy to policy, industry, and public health.

Dr. Mwangi emphasized that the alumni association will continue to support such initiatives. “The University of Nairobi is richly benefiting from the contributions of its alumni. We will keep collaborating with the institution while ensuring the community feels our impact.”

The golden jubilee celebrations, themed “50 Years of Impact in Healthcare in Kenya and Globally,” are part of year-long activities, including a symposium earlier this year that showcased the wide-ranging influence of UoN-trained pharmacists in Kenya and abroad.

For Kibra residents, however, the anniversary meant something more immediate as access to much-needed healthcare and medication, delivered with compassion and expertise.
