Kenya’s Clean Cooking Drive Gets Boost as 42 Stove Entrepreneurs Receive Ksh 68 Million in New Vehicles.
Nairobi, August 11, 2025
Forty-two Kenyan entrepreneurs in the stove production and distribution sector have received a major logistical boost with the handover of seven brand-new pick-ups and 35 new three-tonne, five-wheeler tuk-tuks worth approximately Ksh 68 million (EUR 456,100). The vehicles were distributed as part of a performance-based incentive support scheme under the Promotion of Climate-Friendly Cooking in Kenya programme today at Kawi complex in Nairobi.
The initiative co-financed by the Government of Germany, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the Government of Kenya seeking to accelerate the uptake of improved cook stoves nationwide through a market transformation approach. The fresh injection of transport assets is expected to strengthen last-mile delivery networks, ensuring households can access and adopt clean cooking solutions.
“This support is not only about enhancing business capacity for our entrepreneurs but also about driving Kenya closer to its ambitious climate goals, it is part of the bottom up economy, let's make it usable to reduce respiratory diseases,” the PS Hon. Alex Kamau mentioned.
Since its inception, the programme’s impact has been far-reaching. It now operates in 40 counties, up from just 12 at the start while annual improved cook stove sales have surged from 250,000 units in 2019 to over 850,000 in 2024. This growth has already delivered 117% of Kenya’s NDC targets for improved biomass stoves between 2020 and 2024.
The number of “business-class” stove producers, those selling over 1,000 units monthly, has increased from just 2 to 22, with more than 120 producers benefiting from professionalization kits, workshops, and tools to improve efficiency. Four stove testing laboratories have been established to ensure quality and compliance with Kenyan standards, while 520 last-mile entrepreneurs have been trained and mentored in entrepreneurship, branding, and marketing.
Financial empowerment has also been central to the project, with 100 producers receiving financial literacy training and over Ksh 200 million in credit secured by more than 20 entrepreneurs from local institutions. Nationally, awareness of improved cook stove benefits has risen to about 78% of the population.
The programme has further supported key policy and planning tools, including the Kenya National Cooking Transition Strategy, the Household Air Pollution Strategy, and County Energy Plans for 15 counties, 10 of which are already complete.
"This is a transformation of lives and protection of environment, it has complimented the government effort reflecting on the remarkable legacy of this project enhancing a new phase of adoption of new cooking implementation," CS Hon. Opiyo Wandayi added.
With the new fleet of pick-ups and tuk tuks now in operation, stakeholders expect a stronger distribution chain capable of reaching the most remote households. The project’s leaders say this will not only reduce household air pollution but also deliver socio-economic transformation by creating jobs, boosting incomes, and safeguarding the environment.
"we are very greatful, we have been trained on how to handle our market. The government has given us an insight. To GIZ - it's a good journey. We are going to enhance the delivery speed now," said Lydia one of the beneficiaries.
