In a bold step toward bridging Kenya’s persistent digital divide, asset financing giant WATU today at their headquarters, upper hill in Nairobi unveiled the impact of its flagship campaign Real People. Real Progress, revealing sales of nearly two million products that have transformed the way Kenyans connect, learn, and work.
Speaking during the event at the company’s Nairobi headquarters, WATU executives emphasized that their mission is about far more than selling smartphones, it’s about creating opportunities, improving livelihoods, and giving communities the tools to thrive in a digital age.
“Smartphones are more than just gadgets; they are lifelines for education, communication, and economic empowerment,” the company executive stated. “When people can access knowledge, share their stories, and participate in the digital economy, the whole nation moves forward.”
WATU’s internal research paints a sobering picture, nearly half of Kenyans still do not own a smartphone. This gap limits access to vital services, from mobile banking to e-learning, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
To close this gap, WATU has leveraged its flexible financing models, allowing customers to acquire smartphones and other essential devices through manageable payment plans. The strategy has been particularly effective for small business owners, students, and rural entrepreneurs who would otherwise be locked out of digital access.
The onboarding process is another hallmark of WATU’s customer-first model. Every new client receives a personalized welcome call to walk them through the terms of their agreement, ensuring they fully understand their rights, responsibilities, and payment schedules.
“This is about trust,” said WATU Country manager, mr. Erick Massawe“We want every customer to feel informed, empowered, and in control of their journey toward digital inclusion.”
Central to WATU’s approach is education. The company’s mobile app already used by 1.5 million customers, not only allows for easy payment but also management and account tracking.
WATU believes that each sale is more than a transaction, it is a step toward a more connected and informed Kenya. By coupling technology access with education and transparent customer service, the company aims to dismantle barriers and unlock the country’s full potential in the global digital economy.
As WATU looks to the future, its message is clear, technology is no longer a privilege, it is a necessity. And with the right tools in the right hands, the vision of a digitally inclusive Kenya is not just possible, it’s already unfolding.
