Wings of Courage Soar Again: AMREF Flying Doctors Return to the Skies in Tribute to Fallen Heroes.
In a strong sensation return to the skies, AMREF Flying Doctors today at Wilson Airport in Nairobi launched the “Wings of Courage” maiden mission, its first flight since the devastating Mwihoko, air accident of 7 August 2025 that claimed six lives, including four dedicated crew members.
The sombre yet determined moment marked both a tribute to the fallen and a powerful declaration that the life-saving work they championed will not be grounded. Among those remembered were Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani Miaro, Dr Charles Mugo Njoroge, and Nurse Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula, alongside two residents of Mwihoko in Kiambu County.
Departing from Nairobi for Belgium, the mission transported a critically injured patient from Zanzibar who required urgent treatment abroad. For the patient’s family, AMREF Flying Doctors was a final hope. For the crew, it was a mission infused with remembrance and purpose.
"This flight is more than a mission, it is a message. A message that courage endures, that service continues, and that the legacy of our fallen heroes lives on in every life we save. We fly not just with wings, but with purpose," said Steve Gitau, CEO of AMREF Flying Doctors.
The “Wings of Courage” flight stands as a living memorial, proof that the mission to heal, rescue, and serve continues even through profound loss. For AMREF Flying Doctors, each mission is now also a tribute, a way of carrying the spirit of those lost into the lives they save.
Founded in 1957 as part of AMREF Health Africa, AMREF Flying Doctors has spent over six decades delivering emergency air ambulance services across Africa and beyond, operating a fleet of five fully dedicated aircraft and holding European Aeromedical Institute (EURAMI) accreditation for 15 consecutive years.
Today’s take-off was not just the start of a flight, it was the continuation of a promise. A promise to honour the fallen not with silence, but with action in the skies they loved.
