Speaking on the power of business events in shaping Africa’s economic future, Havar Bauck, Co-founder of Hotel Online, underscored the transformative role of visibility, capital, and digital transformation in unlocking the continent’s full potential.

“In today’s competitive market, visibility is everything,” Bauck noted. “The businesses that stand out are the ones that attract investment, build partnerships, and unlock new opportunities. For Africa, business events are no longer just networking spaces they are catalysts for trade and investment, creating the channels that connect ideas with capital and talent with markets.”

Bauck emphasized that visibility, however, comes at a cost. To reach the right audiences, businesses must commit resources to the right channels of engagement, conferences, expos, trade fairs, and networking forums. These platforms, he said, “place enterprises directly in front of investors, policymakers, and clients who can turn potential into profit.”

Beyond visibility lies the need for capital and skilled operators. According to Bauk, business events bridge this gap by linking entrepreneurs with financiers and equipping them with the knowledge to scale effectively. “Whether it’s training hotel managers to transform standard facilities into profitable hospitality assets, or helping SMEs sharpen strategies to accelerate cash flow, events deliver both the skills and the connections required for growth,” he explained.

He further highlighted the concept of cash velocity that is the speed at which money moves from clients to a company’s bank account as a vital factor in business success. Events, he said, provide insights into digital payments, financial inclusion, and investment readiness, helping businesses generate and manage revenue more efficiently.

“The final piece is digital transformation,” Bauck added. “As Africa positions itself for global competitiveness, digitization is the key to unlocking untapped markets. Business events foster critical conversations and collaborations around technology adoption, enabling industries to leapfrog traditional barriers and seize new opportunities.”

Drawing from his own experience with Hotel Online, Bauck stressed the urgency of moving from manual systems to digital platforms. “You need the tools to distribute your rates. The bigger picture is shifting from manual to digital, where travelers increasingly book their hotels online. This trend, fueled by regional cooperation in East Africa, is stimulating cross-border transport and boosting demand for travel ultimately driving growth in the digital hotel platform,” he said.

Hotel Online, which now operates in 27 countries, has grown by actively engaging partners and expanding networks through direct outreach. “We do it by moving outside there to reach partners, to meet them, to knock at their doors,” Bauck noted. He emphasized the importance of supporting emerging entrepreneurs, urging industry leaders not to dismiss startups but to give them opportunities to thrive. “Technology is there to enhance our experience. What matters is creating space for new ideas and new players to grow.”

In conclusion, Bauck stressed that business events must be seen as more than gatherings. “They are platforms for catalyzing Africa’s trade and investment future. They turn visibility into capital, capital into velocity, and velocity into sustainable transformation unlocking Africa’s true economic potential.”
