The Council of Governors (CoG) has removed Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga from his position as Vice-Chairperson, minutes after his resignation, over remarks he made concerning the death of Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a special meeting convened today and chaired by CoG Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, the council resolved to unanimously pass a vote of no confidence against Governor Kahiga, describing his remarks as“reckless, untimely and unspeakable," especially during a period of national mourning.

“Following our statement issued yesterday, we convened a special council meeting to deliberate on the interpretation and impact of the utterances made by His Excellency Kahiga Mutahi, the Vice-Chair of the Council of Governors, and the mitigation thereof," read part of the council’s statement.

The council expressed deep disappointment in Kahiga's comments, saying they were his personal opinions and did not reflect or represent the position or values of the CoG. “We therefore disassociate ourselves in total and condemn these utterances which were untimely, reckless and unspeakable, especially at this time of deep mourning," Ahmed Abdullahi stated.

Consequently, the council resolved to remove Kahiga from the leadership of the CoG with immediate effect and announced plans to convene another meeting to elect a new vice-chair.“The Council has passed a vote of no confidence on His Excellency Kahiga Mutahi and agreed to remove him as Vice-Chair with immediate effect,” the resolution stated.

In his statement, the Council of Governors chair extended an official apology to the family of the late Raila Odinga on behalf of all 47 county governments, expressing solidarity and condolences during the period of mourning.

“The Council of Governors extends its deepest apologies to the family of Raila Amolo Odinga CJH on behalf of the 47 county governments of Kenya for the unfortunate remarks by Governor Kahiga. We continue to mourn with the family during this difficult time and reaffirm our solidarity, respect, and support to them," Ahmed Abdullahi said.

The council further called on all leaders to exercise restraint and mindfulness in their public utterances, urging adherence to the national values and principles of governance as enshrined in the Constitution.

“The Council remains available to offer any assistance that may be required. We further urge all leaders across the political divide to exercise restraint and mindfulness in their public utterances,” he added.

Governor Kahiga had earlier tendered his resignation as Vice-Chair of the Council, following growing public outrage over his remarks on Odinga's death, which many Kenyans termed insensitive and divisive.

The CoG concluded its statement by reaffirming its respect for the late Odinga, describing him as a towering statesman whose legacy of democracy and national unity would continue to inspire the nation.

“May the soul of Raila Amolo Odinga CJH continue resting in eternal peace,” Ahmed Abdullahi concluded.
