Kenya’s ambitious dream of building Africa’s Silicon Valley moved closer to reality today when President Dr. William Ruto officially launched Phase One of the Konza Technopolis, marking a defining moment in the country’s journey toward becoming a global hub for innovation, research, and smart urban development.
The event, held at the ultra-modern Konza Technopolis in Machakos County, brought together top government officials, international partners, diplomats and industry leaders. Among those in attendance were Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo, Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Housing and Urban Development Alice Wahome and Principal Secretary for ICT, Eng. John Tanui, alongside several principal secretaries and governors from the region.
Addressing the gathering, President Ruto reflected on his first visit to Konza in 2014, when the project was little more than an expanse of bushland.
“When I came here as Deputy President, this place was muddy and a bush,” he recalled. “Many did not believe it would happen. But today, we see what determination, resilience, and focus can achieve.”
The Head of State lauded the project’s steady progress, describing it as a symbol of Kenya’s determination to leap into the digital future.
“The time has come for Kenya to rise in confidence, to act in courage and to take its rightful place among the great nations shaping the future of the world,” he said.
Phase One of Konza Technopolis showcases 40 kilometers of modern road networks, landscaped green spaces, a smart utilities corridor spanning 170 kilometers and a 120-megawatt power substation using advanced gas-insulated technology.
It also features a wastewater reclamation plant capable of recycling up to 90 percent of used water, a 7.5-million-liter daily fresh water system and an AI-driven Intelligent Operations Center managing traffic, lighting and security.
“These innovations make Konza not only Kenya’s smartest city but also a model for sustainable urban living in Africa,” President Ruto noted.
At the heart of the Technopolis lies the National Data Center, which anchors Kenya’s e-Citizen framework, a digital platform hosting over 23,000 government services and payment systems.
“All government payments, all digital assets and the ecosystem of our digitized government are anchored here in Konza,” the President emphasized, adding that Kenya is on course to become a fully digital nation.
Highlighting education as a key pillar of the city’s ecosystem, President Ruto announced the rapid growth of the Open University of Kenya, which now has 15,000 students from 70 countries and offers 47 programs.
He further announced plans to expand the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) at Konza, which will soon open its doors, alongside the Konza Convention Center, envisioned as a global venue for innovation, trade and scientific collaboration.
President Ruto urged the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) to prioritize public-private partnerships (PPPs) for future developments such as hotels and the convention center to ensure long-term sustainability.
He also emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive urban growth through affordable housing, citing the ongoing construction of 1,042 housing units, with an additional 2,000 units under Phase Two and a total target of 10,000 homes for Konza City.
“These homes are designed for a 24-hour innovation economy, smart, connected and affordable for young professionals and families,” he said.
Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome confirmed that the housing project adheres to smart city principles and will create up to 1,000 jobs daily at full capacity.
“We are using new, efficient building technologies and ensuring that every project aligns with the President’s vision of sustainable, affordable and inclusive living,” she affirmed.
In his remarks, ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui expressed gratitude to the President for his continued support, noting that Ruto has visited Konza five times since its inception, a testament to his hands-on leadership in advancing Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.
“Your Excellency, you have been the architect of the financing model that allowed Konza to thrive. We are grateful and committed to leading Kenya’s digital revolution,” said Eng. Tanui.
Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo echoed the call for whole-of-government collaboration, suggesting that the entire Cabinet convene at Konza to identify opportunities for synergy across ministries.
“By the time you leave office, this place will not only be the best tech hub in Africa but among the most advanced in the world,” Kabogo stated.
Konza Technopolis, located 70 kilometers from Nairobi, is envisioned as a smart, sustainable city integrating technology, education, enterprise and modern urban living. When complete, it is expected to generate over 200,000 jobs and contribute up to 2 percent of Kenya’s GDP.
As President Ruto unveiled a commemorative plaque and laid the foundation stone for the new housing project, the day’s event symbolized more than just progress, it marked a new chapter in Kenya’s pursuit of a knowledge-based economy.
“This is no longer a dream to postpone,” President Ruto declared. “It is a destiny we must fulfill and the time is now.”
