The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued its nomination certificate to Samuel Muchina Nyagah as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Ol Kalou Constituency by-election, with senior party leaders rallying members to unite behind the candidate and promising an issue-based campaign centered on development and government accountability.
Speaking during the issuance of the nomination certificate, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan said the party would actively participate in every electoral contest across the country, insisting that UDA remained a national outfit committed to democratic competition and peaceful elections.
Hassan said the party leadership, including President William Ruto, was fully behind the Ol Kalou campaign and pledged support to the party’s candidates in ongoing and upcoming by-elections.
“We take our elections very seriously. Wherever there is an election, UDA will be there and UDA will stand with its candidates because UDA is a national party,” Hassan said.
The Secretary General criticized divisive politics and warned leaders against engaging in inflammatory rhetoric that could heighten tensions during campaigns.
“I never thought in my time I would hear leaders referring to others as traitors and using divisive language. Those are the kinds of politics we must shun,” he said.
He urged supporters and aspirants to maintain peace before, during and after the by-election, saying the ruling party had a responsibility to protect national stability while allowing all Kenyans equal opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
“We expect that we should conduct our elections in the most peaceful manner possible. Every opinion must be given an equal opportunity to participate in a democratic process without violence and intimidation,” Hassan added.
UDA National Elections Board Chairperson Anthony Mwaura said the party had concluded all internal nomination dispute mechanisms before issuing the certificate to Muchina.
Mwaura noted that the party’s elections board had handled complaints raised after the nomination exercise and confirmed that no pending disputes remained before the party tribunal.
“We received a complaint from one of our members who participated in the nominations. That complaint has been conclusively processed and a final decision made,” Mwaura said.
“As it is now, there is no matter pending in the party’s dispute resolution mechanism, and therefore the National Elections Board can proceed to grant the nomination certificate to the person declared winner,” he added.
Muchina, while accepting the nomination certificate, thanked residents of Ol Kalou for trusting him with the party ticket and pledged to champion development projects and education support if elected.
“I would like to thank the people of Ol Kalou for giving me the opportunity to seek to represent them in the National Assembly,” he said.
The UDA candidate said he would align himself with the government’s development agenda and work closely with the Kenya Kwanza administration to deliver services to residents.
“We are here to support the ruling party and the President in building a better future for everyone. I will ensure students get the necessary bursaries and support that will empower their educational journey,” Muchina said.
Senior government adviser Moses Kuria described Muchina’s nomination as a strong signal from Ol Kalou voters that they wanted leadership focused on local issues and development rather than personality-driven politics.
By choosing Muchina, Kuria said residents had demonstrated confidence in a candidate familiar with the constituency’s history and challenges.
“By nominating Samuel Muchina, the people of Ol Kalou have demonstrated that they want a leader who is close to them and understands their issues,” Kuria said.
He argued that the by-election would become a contest between development records and political slogans, noting that UDA, as the ruling party, would be judged based on its performance in government.
“We are not just any other party. We are the ruling party and therefore we are going to be judged based on what we have done for the people,” he said.
Kuria added that the party intended to use the campaign period to showcase ongoing government projects and achievements in the constituency while preparing for broader political mobilization ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“This election is going to take us almost one year before the next general election. Going forward, you will see us preparing for the next election by building an even more expansive movement across the country,” he said.
The Ol Kalou by-election is expected to attract heightened political attention as parties seek to test their popularity ahead of the next electoral cycle.
UDA leaders expressed confidence that the party would retain the seat, with officials maintaining that the campaign would focus on unity, development and support for the government’s agenda.
The by-election comes at a time when political parties are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with analysts expected to closely monitor turnout, voter sentiment and the performance of the ruling coalition in traditionally competitive regions.
